THE IMPORTANCE OF GEOMETRY

Since this is my last post I would like to talk about the importance of teaching geometry in Primary Education.

First, I want to point out that geometry is a fundamental part of humans' culture and it is difficult to find contexts in which geometry does not appear directly or indirectly.

Teaching geometry is also important because our everyday verbal lenguage has many geometric terms, such as line, point, parallel, etc... If we have to communicate with others about one location, size or shape of something, the geometric terminology is fundamental.

On the other hand geometry is one of the parts of Mathematics closest to the reality that surrounds us and that is why its teaching is essential from the earliest stages of education to the last ones.

So, as teachers, we must not forget to teach it in an entertaining way to achieve the best results in our students!

GEOGEBRA

Hi everyone!

Today, I would like to write about Geogebra, which is a dynamic maths software for all levels of educacion that mixs geometry, algebra, graphs, statistics and calculus in only one program.

Although, at first, it seems to be difficult to use, it is not and is another different way to learn geometry.

Below you can see two examples of figures made by geogebra. The first one is a rhombus and the other is a pentagon.

Do not wait and try to make any figure with this program, you will see how fun is it!

APRENDE JUGANDO

¡Buenas tardes!

LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE

If you like to learn and practice when you really want, I have the solution: Khan Academy.

Khan Academy is a web site created in 2006 which offers practical exercises, instructional videos and a personalized learning panel that allows students to learn at their own pace, in and out of the classroom.

This web site teaches different subjects and within Mathematics, we can find the area of geometry which has numerous types of exercises to make students learn and improve their knowledge:

A NEW RESOURCE: PIKTOCHART

Good evening!

Today I bring a new and easy resource called Piktochart.
Piktochart is an online and free application that facilitates the creation of infographics for those who have no knowledge of design or programming. To do this, the application provides pre-designed templates, graphics, icons... and the user can also add images and videos according to his needs or ideas.

It is a good way to explain and learn in a different way and in the following link you have an example of an infographic about spatial geometry:

Hope you find this post useful!

BILINGUALISM: MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH, POSSIBLE?

In the first post, I want to write about an issue that is currently gaining more and more importance: bilingualism.

As we know, English has been considered the international language all over the world and every day is greater the number of Europeans that learn and bet for it.

It is certainly true that in the case of Spanish education, it has left a great deal to be desired, as it is now when this language is acquiring the importance that it has.

Currently, there is a large number of primary education schools that focus on bilingualism including English as the language of some different subjects.

Mathematics is a good subject to carry bilingualism out due to it does not include such extensive or varied vocabulary as Natural or Social Sciences. Although, the terminology learnt is useful because numbers are everyday around us.

You can find an example of a textbook of English and Mathematics in the following link:

I consider that this kind of books with interdisciplinary character are a good way to increase and improve the English level in children, at the same time they are learning and acquiring the knowledge of the other subject.

Hello everyone!

I am Aida Cordón García, a student of Primary Education at the University of Malaga. I create this blog for “Didactics of Geometry”, which is a subject of the third course of the degree.

In this blog, I will write different posts about innovations, resources, etc... that seem to be interesting and useful from this subject or for it. Also, I will argue and share my ideas and opinions.

Hope you like it!
